Sometimes, when a cultural institution has been around long enough, we gloss over it’s past–essentially neglecting the role it may have played in historical events. Today’s post is about art and animation, and the role it has had in shaping ideas about specific people. For the purpose of simplicity I am highlighting two animations, Popeye’s “Scrap the Japs” and Disney Studio’s “Der Fuehrer’s Face” which features the beloved Donald Duck. As a bonus I have included a video from Randomland in which Disneyland aficionado Justin Scarred talks about the bioengineering giant, Monsanto. What, you never knew that Monsanto sponsored an attraction at Disneyland, California? Well you’re in luck you’re about to find out the connection between Monsanto and Disney, but first, lets check out those cartoons:

First, “Popeye: Scrap The Japs” (Paramount Pictures)

Second, “Der Fuehrer’s Face” (Walt Disney Productions)

Bonus, Randomland: Secret remains of the House of the Future at Disneyland

So what are your thoughts, were the shorts homophobic, culturally insensitive, racial? Leave your thoughts below, share your own videos, or links.
